How To File By the July Form 990 Deadline

We are almost halfway through another month which means a new Form 990 deadline is right around the corner.

Exempt organizations with a fiscal tax year starting in March must file IRS Form 990 by the July 15 deadline.

However, with July 15 falling on a Sunday this year, you technically have until Monday, July 16 to file your IRS Form 990. Woot woot! \o.o/

Let’s review how to file by the July Form 990 deadline to keep your organization in good standing with the IRS.

How To File By the July Form 990 Deadline

Select The Correct Form 990

There are four types of 990 Forms that exempt-organizations can file. Here’s a super-quick guide on the IRS Form 990 Series to help you determine which 990 Form to file:

Form 990:

If your tax-exempt organization’s gross receipts are greater than $200,000 and your total assets (art, historical pieces, etc.) are greater than $500,000 then this is the form you are searching for.

Form 990-EZ:

If your charitable organization’s gross receipts were less than $200,000, and your total assets are less than $500,000 you will need to file Form 990-EZ.

Form 990-N:

If your organization’s gross receipts for the previous fiscal year were less than $50,000, then this form is for you. This one is actually very different from the other types and is referred to as an e-Postcard.

Form 990-PF:

Form 990-PF is filed by Exempt & Taxable Private Foundations as well as Non-exempt Charitable Trusts which the IRS treats as private foundations.

Best & Worst Ways to E-file Form 990

The May 15th tax deadline for nonprofit and tax exempt organizations is coming up quick. You may have been playing the procrastination game up until this point, but now it is time to e-file your form. Express990.com provides e-filing of Form 990, 990-EZ, and 990-N that will help you break your procrastination habit and e-file well before the deadline. Now let's mix fun and taxes and go over the best and worst ways to e-filing your Form 990.

The Best
You probably already know I am going to say that Express990.com is the best way to transmit your 990 form to the IRS, and you would be correct my friend. It is the best solution available, but there is a bit more to it.

Form 990
Once you have organized all the information you need to e-file Form 990, our system will walk you through the entire process. If you are used to paper filing Form 990, oh honey your life is about to change for the better. First, you will be doing good for the planet because e-filing requires no paper. Second, you will save yourself from headache and stress because you don't have to worry about ink smudging, information being entered in wrong and you can't fix it, you don't have papers all over the place, and I'm telling you - less paper saves lives. I really could go on and on about all the benefits of e-filing with Express990.com, but we have other forms to cover.

Form 990-EZ
The best way to e-file your 990-EZ is with Express990.com. With these long forms, it is easy to miss sections but e-filing provides you with the advantage of highlighting every section that needs to be completed. Our system walks you through each and every step so you don't miss anything and that makes the entire process so much easier. Express990 also provides great education on every schedule for the 990-EZ. If you do get stuck or have a question, call our amazing customer support team.

Form 990-N
If you need to e-file your 990-N in a few minutes and get back to work, Express990 provides a few options for you. You can quickly e-file on your computer or using our Express990 App. There's an app for everything these days. The entire process for e-filing your 990-N is quick and easy. We provide helpful prompts to guide you the entire way. The best part is that it is completely FREE to e-file for the current tax year. Get started now at Express990.com or download the Express990 App on your Apple or Android device.

The Worst
Honestly, the worst way to e-file your 990 is to not do it at all. If you miss filing your 990 (any form from the series) for 3 consecutive years, you will lose your tax exempt status. Then it's a big mess that has to be worked out with the IRS directly and nobody wants to go through that.

Another worst way is to not contact the Express990 Support Team if you have a question. We don't want you to just guess, guessing causes returns to be rejected. Contact the Express990 Support team with any question you may have via phone: 704-839-2321 or email: support@expresstaxexempt.com.
